Talking about trash

In the aftermath of the recent “Plagiarismgate” the editors of The Signal promised us to be more prudent and diligent with future columns. Has this promise already slipped like a New Year’s resolution?

How else can you explain Jim Hightower’s absurd commentary on an island of plastic pollution. (“Let’s chuck the water bottle,” Jan. 12)
Although I agree with him when he discusses in his column the cons of bottled drinking water, his claim of an island twice the size of Texas, (twice the size of Texas?) consisting of nothing but plastic trash floating somewhere in the Pacific Ocean is irresponsible and unsubstantiated.

Come on now: Where is the evidence; photos of such a monstrous garbage heap?

There is no doubt that our oceans, lakes and rivers are polluted, but where did he get this information?

I, too, believe in recycling and reducing trash to help our environment and that saving our planet has to be one of our priorities. But statements like that serve no other purpose than to brainwash and scare our kids and grandkids even more with such one sided “green” drivel.

Should The Signal not have checked the facts and verified a statement like that before printing it?
