School for at-risk youth debated

In its first meeting of 2010, the Santa Clarita planning commission will decide whether to allow a charter school that tutors at-risk students to open in a shopping center at the corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway.

The owners of Blvd. West Salon are concerned that opening an Opportunities for Learning Charter School near their shop would disturb their customers.

In a letter sent to city staff in October, the shop owners wrote, "We have a wide variety of clientele ranging in age from elderly to young children and we would not like for them to be subjected to the language, smoking and loitering that often accompanies this type of project."

Opportunities for Learning already has schools in Canyon Country, Valencia and Newhall and Castaic, according to its Web site.

City officials have recommended the commission approve the school, according to the meeting agenda.
