Hollings has no actual point

I am still waiting for Andre Hollings’ point from his latest column, (“The taking of America,” Jan. 15).

Halfway through he wrote: “Before you trash this column as right-wing fear mongering or extremism, wrestle with the actual arguments.”

I thought Hollings would be getting to his actual point soon, but was left disappointed when he simply went on to quote “one local Democrat” and then “another.” Apparently these people don’t have real names.

In the end, Hollings didn’t have an argument. He had a list of quotes — many of them unverifiable.

If Hollings’ point was that President Barack Obama is adored by a segment of the population, I would say, “big deal.” John McCain choosing Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate was only an attempt to capitalize on Hillary Clinton’s devout followers and backlash from losing to Obama.

Now Palin has many devout followers who apparently see no fault in her. I remember my days at West Coast Baptist College and hearing a few preachers from the chapel pulpit touting former President George W. Bush as some kind of American savior who would bring Biblical principles to America.

Ron Paul has a very devout following. And let’s not forget Ronald Reagan, the Republican deity.

Anyone can quote people on either side of the political spectrum all day and not really accomplish much of anything.

How is it any of these political leaders’ fault they have devout followers? Should Obama try to be less likable?

Trying to make a connection between people being forced to like a dictator and any of these American leaders is a tough sell and might even be considered dishonest.

Hollings needs to tell us something we don’t know. We have many zombies on both sides of the political landscape who strive to be good Democrats or good Republicans. Personally, I think both are bad for America.
