The newly formed Canyon Country Optimist Club announced its first major project -- an annual "Childhood Cancer Bowl-A-Thon."

The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 27 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Lanes on Soledad Canyon Road, in Canyon Country.

The Bowl-A-Thon will benefit the Michael Hoefflin Foundation's Camp Country Jamboree, a free camp for cancer challenged kids and their siblings and the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA.

The Michael Hoefflin Foundation has a unique program that aids families that have children afflicted with cancer by assisting families with expenses to help them financially meet the high cost of medical treatment; they also give each child a care package which includes a teddy bear and other items, and have many other programs to aid the child with cancer and their families.

The Camp Country Jamboree is a four-day weekend camp-out in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The camp-out, which has a different theme each year, allows children recovering from cancer and their siblings to enjoy an exciting and fun-filled long weekend.

The Hoefflin Foundation made arrangements to send several children to this unique camp-out this year.

The Bowl-A-Thon will fund additional local children to attend the 2010 camp-out.

The Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA has instituted a therapy program with an initial goal to enroll and vaccinate 18 children with malignant brain tumors.

They seek organizations such as the Canyon Country Optimist Club to fund the special therapy program developed.

At this time six children have been enrolled in a experimental program, which costs $20,000 per child.

Members of the Canyon Country Optimist Club will be soliciting merchants in the community to sponsor a bowling team.

The team sponsorship is $400.
