LeMar reaches for the Big Mac

Canyon senior nominated for prestigious game

Her first reaction was: “Really?”


Canyon senior basketball player Brooke LeMar has been nominated to play in the 2010 McDonald’s All-America High School Basketball Game.

“She’s the engine that makes us go,” said Canyon head coach Chuck Johns. “She handles the ball, she breaks pressure, she sets the offense and we feed off her.”

LeMar joins Golden Valley’s Trevor Wiseman on the boys’ side as the only locals to be nominated to play in the game.

Both are longshots to make the final teams as more than 2,000 basketball players from across the country are nominated for the team.

Yet it’s still a big honor to be nominated.

LeMar is one of 22 girls in Southern California to make the watch list.

The teams will be announced on Feb. 11.

“It’s pretty big, but obviously getting a scholarship is bigger than that,” said LeMar, who verbally committed to Southern Illinois in October. “(Getting the McDonald’s nomination) just shows you that the hard work you put in, it will pay off in some way.”

In the recent past, Hart’s Ashlee Trebilcock, Taylor Lilley and Tatianna Thomas, Canyon’s Nicole Leon and Valencia’s Kelley Tarver have been nominated.

All those girls played for NCAA Division I college basketball programs.

LeMar will, too.

In 2008, Hart’s Michael Montgomery was nominated to play on the boys side.

None of the previous nominees were selected to play in the game.

In LeMar’s senior season, the four-year varsity player (three at Canyon, one at Golden Valley), is averaging 14.5 points, 4.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

Canyon is currently tied for first place in the Foothill League with a 4-1 mark.

Last season, she averaged 13 points, 5.2 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
