A total of eight spots will be open on the city's two commissions and audit panel in July and applications are due to City Hall by Friday.

Two seats on the Planning Commission will expire July 31, including that of commission chair Mike Berger, who has said that he will not be serving another term.

The Planning Commission has the authority to investigate and make recommendations to the City Council on proposals for housing developments and major public projects.

Two seats on the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission also expire and an additional seat that belonged to newly elected Councilwoman Laurie Ender will also need to be filled.

The parks commission advises the council in all parks, public recreation and community service matters.

Two seats on the Open Space Preservation District Financial Accountability and Audit Panel will also expire in July, and a third seat will be open since panel member Calvin Hedman submitted his letter of resignation.

This panel was formed last year to oversee the Open Space Preservation District, which collects fees from property owners to buy undeveloped land to be preserved as open space.

Each commission and panel has five members appointed by the City Council. Commission members serve four-year terms and panel members serve two-year terms.

Applicants must be Santa Clarita residents 18 years or older and must submit three letters of recommendation with their application. Forms are available at or at City Hall.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday at the City Clerk's office, located in Suite 304 at 23920 Valencia Blvd.

For more information, contact the City Clerk's office at (661) 255-4391.
