The Valencia boys soccer team bounced back from its tough loss to Canyon on Monday by defeating West Ranch 1-0 Tuesday at West Ranch High School.

Vikings midfielder Renato Sanchez scored for the Vikings late in the second half, when a throw-in bounced off another player and landed at his feet. Sanchez promptly buried it in the back of the goal.

“I don’t know who flicked it, but it was pretty lucky,” Sanchez said.

Both teams battled throughout the game, which sometimes looked more like a rugby match with players sprawled across the field.
“I’m really proud of how my guys played after (Monday’s loss),” said Valencia head coach Tony Scalercio. “This is a huge win for us. We lost our first game yesterday and I knew it would be difficult to get the guys up today.”

The Wildcats (6-8-1, 2-6-1) came close to tying it up in the last five minutes of the game, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

West Ranch defender Winston Edmond threw the ball into the box, where it bounced off the heads of a few different Wildcats before Valencia goalkeeper Alex McIntyre finally grabbed it.

West Ranch’s best opportunity came on a hard shot by midfielder Javier Chavez, but the ball hit the left post and bounced across the mouth of the goal without being redirected.

“That’s how it’s been,” said West Ranch head coach Mo Burgess. “That’s par for the course this year.”

It looked like Valencia (9-5-2, 5-1) would get another goal when forward Adam Eisen had a breakaway and a wide open shot, but Eisen’s shot was off-frame and wide right.

Sanchez admitted that it was hard for him to get going in the game.

“We played our hearts out yesterday and we are exhausted,” Sanchez said.

The Vikings will take on Golden Valley at Valencia on Friday, while West Ranch will host Hart.
