Brain food for business people

I  have enjoyed Ken Keller’s writings for years and would like to respond to his March 3 column, “Advice for a small-business owner.”   

I’m sure the struggles outlined by the featured “small-business owner” can be duplicated all across our valley, our state and our country. Keller’s reference to the Spencer Johnson book, “Who Moved My Cheese?” is very appropriate for these times.  

Thankfully, I saw the “cheese” moving a while ago and began to move into other areas that work well in this “interesting” economy. Keller’s advice, as usual, is right on target. Working through today’s marketplace, however is certainly challenging, scary and frustrating.

Business is changing and business owners need to find their new cheese.  

Consider this:  Google, a powerful Internet information resource, younger than my 14-year-old son, is experiencing double-digit growth in the billions of dollars — and the venerable American business icon General Motors is bankrupt. Are we using yesterday’s tools for tomorrow’s business? In my industry, and I’m sure most other industries, many are frozen. Companies don’t know what to do in this economy. Yet some businesses are thriving.  

I think the cheese is moving to technology and fresh ways to communicate a company’s value proposition. We need to start thinking differently.

If businesses are unable to change and figure out how to function in this new environment, sadly, many more will be gone.
