Why I support Boydston

I read last Sunday's editorial ("All things considered, we recommend...," March 14) with amazement. It's not that The Signal editorial board recommended no changes for all three seats on the City Council, it's that the editorial board doesn't seem to understand how our City Hall actually works.

It's all about investigating the process of reaching decisions. It's about lobbyists. It's about city planning staff cozying up to their former boss-turned-consultant to developers. It's about outside political action groups trying to buy our council seats. It's about citizens having to form groups and hire lawyers just to have our local government pay attention.

And it's about our city manager trying to push through his agenda of big projects with a minimum of community input, lack of sufficient environmental impact reports and a bunch of conditional use permits to get around local building restrictions.

Our form of representative government works best when disagreeing voices are heard and everything is debated vigorously - in our case, at City Council meetings.

In order for this to happen, the people need courageous voices on the City Council, leaders who will go out of their way to seek public input and challenge our city manager when he tries to suppress it.

This is exactly what TimBen Boydston did during his 18 months on the council in 2007-08, when he served out the remaining term of Cameron Smyth. Many think that his promise not to run for election in 2008 was our great loss.

Well, now we can get Boydston back on the City Council; now we can make sure everything is discussed openly. The voices and concerns of all of us will get greater consideration and the council as a whole will be better for his addition to it.

That's why I support Boydston for City Council.
