An 11-year-old Saugus girl reported a man attempted to kidnap her while she walked home from Santa Clarita Elementary School Wednesday afternoon, according a report from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

Detectives are investigating the incident, which happened at about 3:45 p.m. near Las Mananitas Drive and Vista Delgado Drive in Saugus.

According to the girl, a man driving an older-model gray and white van pulled alongside her and began yelling in a threatening and commanding manner for her to get in his vehicle, the report said.

The victim got scared and began running toward her home. When she got near Las Mananitas Drive and La Granja Drive, she looked back and the van was gone, according to the report.

Deputies were called in, initiated a crime broadcast and began an immediate canvas of the area in search of the suspect, but he was not located. Detectives have since been to the neighborhood to conduct follow-up interviews and investigate further.

The suspect is described only as a male Hispanic, in his 40s, with brown hair and facial hair. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a green baseball cap and black sunglasses.

Officials from the Saugus Union School District and Santa Clarita Elementary School sent a letter home with all students Thursday outlining the incident and safety precautions children should take when walking home from school.

Sheriff's deputies continue patrolling near Santa Clarita Valley schools during start and dismissal hours, and seek public assistance from anyone who may have seen the alleged kidnapper or his van or has information about the case.
