County Delay Speaks Volumes

The Santa Clarita Valley’s west side communities must be disappointed.

They have been awaiting studies from the county that are to explore three possibilities for self-government: incorporating as their own city, joining the city of Santa Clarita or remaining part of unincorporated Los Angeles County.

And they’re still waiting.

The studies were supposed to be ready for public review last November.

Then it was this coming spring.

Now the independent consulting group that’s conducting the studies for the county says it won’t be finished until the end of this year, and February 2009 is the earliest the public can expect to be able to review those studies.

Meanwhile, the city of Santa Clarita is moving ahead with annexation plans after being approached by residents of Hasley Hills.

Pardon us for pointing this out to the rest of the west side residents — those in Castaic, West Ranch, Westridge and Stevenson Ranch — but doesn’t the different levels of efficiency with which these two governments treat residents’ futures speak volumes?

Exasperation with gigantic Los Angeles County government is what led local residents to work toward incorporating a city some 25 years ago.

No matter what the county may state, speed on this issue does not necessarily serve its interests. We only hope that the reasons for the delays that are being stated are true and the county is being sincere in its effort.

However, every time there is a delay, the county’s credibility becomes a little more tarnished.

We compliment the city of Santa Clarita on being able to fulfill its part by doing its studies in a timely fashion.

Just goes to show yet another reason why annexation to the city of Santa Clarita is the wisest choice.
