A Canyon County man was arrested late Thursday evening for assaulting a deputy after a traffic stop at Soledad Canyon Road and Crossglade Avenue.

James Frederick Castaldi, 41, allegedly fled the scene on foot after he elbowed the deputy, who was trying to arrest Castaldi, after finding drug-related items in his car, a sheriff's report stated.

Deputies gave chase and closed off the surrounding streets as they searched for him. They found him hiding in a garage in a nearby residential neighborhood, according to the report.

Methamphetamine was also recovered at the scene, and Castaldi faces felony and misdemeanor drug charges and misdemeanor charges of battery on a peace officer.

He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

The 5-foot-10-inch, 220-pound Castaldi is expected to appear in Newhall Municipal Court on Monday.
