This is an opportunity

My daughter is in the seventh grade in the William S. Hart Union High School District. We talked about this yesterday. At a time when huge budget cuts have been made to California schools with more to come, we agreed that the focus should be on gratitude that we in this district are lucky enough to have great teachers, libraries, computers, safe campuses, etc.

Is this the lesson we want to teach our kids, that a small ceremony is more important than the quality of education you’re receiving?

To focus on a selfish want and the expense of a great need?

There are many schools in California that have no libraries, where there are not enough text books for every student and where 45 kids are crammed into standing-room-only classrooms. And these schools are about to slammed with more budget cuts, too.

And people in our district want to complain? Please, parents, grow up and take the opportunity to turn this into a teaching moment for your kids.
