Absurd accusations

Trying to respond to Nancy Gauthier’s letter (“Irrefutable evidence,”  Feb. 8), attacking George Bush, is akin to following her as she walks across the entire Santa Clarita Valley broadcasting bird seed and trying to pick it all up. I’ll respond to what I see as her main point.

According to her, “the worst period of time in this country was under former president George Bush.”

First, when you consider the American Revolution, Pearl Harbor and World War II, the Great Depression, Sept. 11, 2001, and President Obama’s first year in office, that is absurd.

Between December 2001 and December 2008, the average unemployment rate was 5.5 percent. After one year of Obama, it was 10 percent and calculated to be above 7 percent for several more years.

During the Bush administration, there were 25 consecutive quarters of growth in gross domestic product.

In the seven years President Bush was held accountable for budget deficits, the largest deficit was in 2008, a little more than $400 billion.

In the seven years in which Obama will be held accountable for budget deficits, the Congressional Budget Office and the White House project there will be four years in which the deficit will exceed $500 billion, one year it will exceed $800 billion, one year it will exceed $900 billion and one year in which it will exceed $1.3 trillion.

Let’s not forget the Democratic Party was in control of Congress for the last two years of the Bush administration, and its actions in coercing lenders to make home loans to people who could not be expected to repay them was the single-largest contributor to the recession, which began to develop during the last year of the Bush administration, or as Obama calls it, the worst depression since the Great Depression.
