Spring brings colorful flowers, blue skies and sunny days. At First Presbyterian Church, Newhall, spring brings Life Academy, a series of short-burst classes exploring questions of belief and life.

"The whole purpose of Life Academy is to encourage adults to read and study the Bible," said Tim Knox, elder of adult education. "I think Adult Education has planned some real interesting and mentally challenging classes."

Dr. Fazale Rana, a scientist with Reasons to Believe, will give a talk on Adam and the origins of the Human Species. He will tie Genesis into scientific discoveries like the finding of ‘Lucy,' an ancestor of humans dating back to 3.2 million years ago, and he will discuss how these discoveries do not contradict the Bible.

Dr. Jeff Zweerink, also part of Reasons to Believe, will speak about global warming, exploring how the changes on the earth are reflected in the Bible.

"Many people are unable to commit to a long term bible study class, but these classes short," said Tim Knox, elder of adult education.

Some of the classes meet once for an hour. Others meet for an hour on two or three different days. Spring 2010 Life Academy begins April 11 with three courses and ends May 16. Signups will continue until the classes start.

In an attempt to encourage more adults to study the Bible, the Adult Education Committee created these short term classes.
First Presbyterian has scheduled ten classes. Some of the classes will take a one time commitment while others will take two or three meetings, Knox said. All the classes - most of them, evening course - will meet on a Sunday, but the hours will vary.
