Hart district seeks COO applicants

The Wm. S. Hart Union High School District today posted a job opening for a chief operations officer  to oversee the district's business services departments.

The position was created in 2006 and vacated when Rob Gapper, the former COO, moved into the position of assistant superintendent of human resources.

In light of the current budget situation, the district decided to keep the position at the chief operations officer level rather than posting for a new assistant superintendent.

Once the opening has been posted, the district will assemble an eligibility list of candidates to be interviewed. The goal is to bring a candidate to the Governing Board in June, with the new officer to start July 1.

Keeping the position at the officer level rather than that of assistant superintendent is expected to save the district approximately $50,000 a year, while maintaining the system of checks and balances on finances intended when the position was originally created in 2006.

Working directly under the superintendent, the chief operations officer is responsible for administration of the Maintenance & Operations, Facilities Modernization, New Construction, Transportation and Risk Management departments.

Among the key issues currently on the table for the new officer will be site selection for a Castaic area high school, completion of modernization projects at Hart High School and Sierra Vista Junior High and plans for performing arts centers at Canyon and Saugus high schools.

The chief operations officer also reviews and must approve the annual budgets and expenditures of the departments assigned under the position.

The new officer will work closely with the district's chief financial officer, whose responsibility is the district's overall budget and financial condition.

The position is posted for a salary range from $112,644 to $131,796. A bachelor's degree in business or public administration or a closely related field is required, with five years of experience in an increasingly responsible professional position managing maintenance, operations or construction projects for a large, multi-site organization.

A master's degree in accounting, finance, business or public administration or experience in a comparable field may be substituted for some of the education or experience requirements.

Applications must be submitted online by April 23, and interviews to appraise the candidates' qualifications are scheduled for the week of May 3. Selection interviews are scheduled for the week of May 17, followed by final interviews the week of May 24.
