The Valencia Boys tennis team defeated Saugus 17-1 on Wednesday in the third Foothill League contest of the season.

Tyler Gottshall, Ben Inchalik, and J.R. Macalutas, Valencia's stellar singles lineup, swept Saugus by winning all nine of their sets by a combined total of 54-6 in games.

In doubles, Valencia's doubles team of Tayven Townsend and Dalton Ullman swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 and John Schmidt and Sam Yun won two sets 6-1, 6-0.

"Hopefully by now, they take care of business, go out every day and dominate," said Valencia head coach Annie Kellogg.

All of Valencia's three Foothill League wins have come in convincing fashion.

How convincing?

In those three wins, Valencia (8-3, 3-0) has captured a total of 48 sets while dropping merely six.

The Vikings have benefitted from a veteran team that lost only one senior from last year's team.

However, just as familiarity is the theme with the Vikings, youth seems to be the ultimate factor in Saugus' play this year.

Saugus head coach Allan Hardbarger views the team's inexperience as a positive, though.

"It's all good learning experience. These matches are all about getting better," he said.

Said Sagie Mofsowitz and Sean Hawbecker, the doubles tandem that captured Saugus' lone set 7-5: "It's great to get in and play better opponents. It's the best way to prepare for upcoming challenges."

One of the intriguing stories of the afternoon was the play of Vikings Daniel Bingham and Daniel Bogan, who swept their opponents 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.

The sweep moved the two, referred to as "Bing and Bo" by their teammates, to a perfect 9-0 in Foothill League matches this season.

Valencia will play Canyon today, which will feature Gottshall against Cowboy Jason Ferlianto, a matchup of two of Foothill League's premier singles players.

Meanwhile, Saugus (4-8, 0-3) will look to capture its first win against a league opponent when it faces a much-improved Golden Valley team.
