Cross-City con job

As long as there have been oblivious, well-intended people, there have been con men willing to grift them.

Every con is the same: Get the victims to look one way, while the con steals from behind their back.

The latest twist on this scam is the developer-subsidized, pork-barrel cross-valley connector.

Local politicians have used their propaganda machine to convince and deceive a naive public that putting an interstate through the city will actually improve traffic.

Those facing gridlock and brutal freeway commutes from years of rampant building need any relief from the traffic mess our city is.

So goes the con of getting the public to look one way.

The con is our local politicians working relentlessly to get federal funds to pay for this highway.

It isn’t for us, but is really for developers.

This new highway through the undeveloped heart of our city will improve traffic for a short time.

The real con is that it opens vast tracts of land that is undeveloped, but already permitted for developments (Porta Bella, Skyline, Keystone, etc.) and ready for the earth-movers.

However they can’t be built without access.

Cue the politicians glad-handing, telling us how wonderful this road is and how it will improve traffic.

This road is specifically designed to make these developments a reality.

Local election signs and campaigns aren’t cheap. And developers contribute more money than open, undeveloped space does.

And there is the ultimate motivation for politicians convincing us how this will solve the problems caused by ridiculous growth that has occurred with their approval and nurturing.

So let’s rejoice the great cross-valley developer subsidy pork-belly con like the city did.

The sad part is, we as a community are too naive, complacent or lazy to care. And so the con continues.
