Coach proposes to rival

CINCINNATI (AP) - They were there to go over the ground rules for their game, but a high school softball coach instead dropped to one knee and asked the rival coach to marry him.

Surprised at the on-field proposal, she answered "yes," to the delight of both teams and the umpires, who applauded as he sealed the deal with a kiss.

Glen Este varsity coach Tim Gregory and Milford High's Christy Foster had been dating more than two years. He thought a softball field was an appropriate place to pop the question.

"It's a big league rival and softball is really what brought us together," he said, admitting, though, that he had been nervous about his move.

Foster says Wednesday's proposal was perfect. But the ensuing game wasn't.

"He won 1-0," she said. "I was upset that we lost a huge league game. We were one hit away from winning, so that was frustrating."

Man drives drunk to prison to serve sentence for DUI
SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) - Police said a Massachusetts man headed to a Vermont prison to serve a two-day sentence for driving under the influence was intoxicated when he drove himself to prison.

Vermont State Police say that staff at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield noticed that a 42-year-old man was intoxicated when he arrived late Tuesday afternoon and that he had driven himself there.
So prison staff called police.

Man arrested when gun goes off at store
PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities said a Surprise man has been arrested on suspicion of endangerment when the gun he was carrying discharged inside a Walmart in El Mirage. El Mirage police said the 30-year-old man entered the store around 1 a.m. Thursday and witnesses said he repeatedly fidgeted with a holstered semi-automatic pistol.

When he went to a counter to pay for a video game, witnesses said he removed the gun from the holster - causing the magazine to come loose and fall to the floor. They said he reinserted the magazine and continued manipulating the gun when it fired, sending one bullet into the ceiling.

Police said no injuries were reported. He was booked into the downtown Phoenix jail on six counts of endangerment and firing a weapon in city limits.

Mower had wrong kind of grass as man arrested
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Border authorities arrested a man trying to cross the border with two mowers stuffed with the type of grass not usually found in machinery. U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrested an unidentified Mexican man who tried to smuggle 53 pounds' worth of marijuana across the border on Friday. The man drove into the inspection station from Tijuana, Mexico, at about 5:30 a.m. hauling the lawnmowers in his pickup.

A dog alerted agents and a search turned up 21 packages of pot crammed inside the chassis of the mowers.

The driver was arrested and booked into San Diego county jail on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Booster club sells alpaca manure
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) - The music booster club at Central Community Unit School District 301 in St. Charles isn't bothering with bake sales and car washes this year. Instead, it's selling bags of something promoters call "paca poo." Minus the cute name, the product is alpaca manure.

Booster club secretary Gudrun Dorgan said it is a great garden fertilizer, and it comes in little pellets that are easy to work into the ground.

Parents, students and teachers will be scooping and selling droppings on today at Inspiration Farm Alpacas.
