The Lula Washington Dance Theatre will present two concerts in two local theaters: the first concert in celebration of National Dance Week and the second celebrating the dance company's 30th anniversary.

LWDT performs at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons as part of National Dance Week on Friday, April 30 at 8 p.m.

The company will reprise works from its national tour, including Ode To The Sixties, Beautiful Venus and Serena, We Wore The Mask and Songs of the Disinherited.

The concert culminates a semester long residency by Lula Washington Dance Theatre at College of the Canyons.

Lula set a new work on students from the college for their May concert, and she worked for 12 weeks with 177 children from Rio Vista Elementary School and Cedar Creek Elementary School in Santa Clarita. Children from the two schools will dance in the April 30 concert as part National Dance Week and to build an early appreciation for dance.

On May 15, LWDT celebrates its own 30th anniversary season with a concert at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State Los Angeles.

This concert will include LWDT's new work "Reign" by hip hop choreographer Rennie Harris; Lula Washington's new "Global Village," set to music by FELA; Lula's connections.2010, with live visual interpretation for video animator JWALT; a new, next generation work by Tamica Washington-Miller and a medley of signature works from the last 30 years.

The dance company decided to celebrate its 30th anniversary with a robust set of national and international touring and a local tour of theaters in Los Angeles. The local tour kicked off in February at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Following the Santa Clarita and Luckman concerts, the company will dance July 7 at the Hollywood Bowl in a new collaboration with jazz trumpheter Terrence Blanchard, followed by a July 24 concert at Grand Performances in Los Angeles. This fall, the company will tour Russia, Pittsburgh and Kentucky.
