Our View: Saluting the SCV's teachers

When it comes to reasons people settle in the Santa Clarita Valley, our schools are usually at, or near, the top of the list.

As every year's standardized test scores indicate, we have many terrific, dedicated educators in our community.

Over the past year, we've watched as the recession has taken its toll on the SCV's schools. School support personnel, including classroom aides, have been laid off valleywide; administrators and teachers have received layoff notices and are awaiting final word on their future employment.

Despite the uncertainty, our educators go about their jobs in a professional fashion and continue to exceed expectations.

So it was appropriate that last Thursday night, educators, students, friends and family packed the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons to say "thank you" to 54 teachers.

Teachers from every school in the valley were honored, selected by their peers for their excellence in mentoring other teachers, their excellence in developing outstanding curricula and their excellence in engaging young minds and in reaching out to family members.

It was the 26th year of the Teacher Tribute ceremony, organized by the Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation.

The 54 who were honored Thursday night joined a list of more than 1,400 educators who have been honored through the years.

It's a small thing, really. A "thank you," a plaque and a few gifts. One night of "thanks," then a return to the uncertainty, the possibility that their jobs may not exist next school year.

But the small things can make all the difference. Saying "thanks" to those who daily invest themselves in our children's lives can, we hope, provide encouragement in the midst of the daily grind.

They're not simply teaching our youth about math and history. They're investing in our future. That's community building.

As another school year nears an end, we pause to thank the SCV Education Foundation and the sponsors who made the Teacher Tribute possible.

But more importantly, our thanks go to all the teachers in this valley for daily pouring themselves into our children.
