SCV Blues Society hosts free festival May 29

The Santa Clarita Valley Blues Society will host its Blues Festival at Mountain View Park on Saturday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission and parking is free. The festival will also feature a car show, raffle, silent auction, barbeque, Kid's Zone and free fire truck rides.

Laurie Morvan Band
Laurie Morvan is an accomplished female guitarist who won "World's Best Self-Produced CD" in the 2010 International Blues Challenge (IBC), was a top 10 finalist and placed in "Top 5 World's Best Self-Produced CD" in the 2008 IBC and won "Blues Artist on the Rise" in 2008. She is a seasoned performer on the Windrose Blues Cruise. Visit her website at

Artwork Jamal and The Acid Blues
Artwork Jamal is a Los Angeles-based blues performer with a powerful, psychedelic-influenced sound. He was named "Male Vocalist of the Year" in the 2010 West Coast Blues Hall of Fame, won the SCV Blues Society's "Battle of the Bands" in 2009 and competed in the 2010 IBC in Memphis. He is joined by The Acid Blues, which consists of Deacon Jones (organ), Michael Fell (harp), Brendan Etter (drums), Rick Reed (bass) and Dave Dills (guitar). Visit Jamal's website at

Phil Gates Band
Phil Gates, a musically multi-talented artist, plays with a fresh and funky vibe. He was awarded the "Beale Street Blues Kings" award at the 2009 IBC, won the Southern California Blues Society's "Battle of the Bands" in 2008 and competed in the 2009 IBC in Memphis. Visit his website at

Preston Smith
Preston Smith, a Los Angeles-based blues, jazz and rock artist, has played for seemingly everyone under the sun - including Steven Spielberg, Aaron Spelling, Sonny Bono and Barbra Streisand - and shared the stage with dozens more. See his MySpace profile here.

Five Yard Dog
Five Yard Dog is a blues trio that includes Michael Moxley (bass and vocals), Dave Asmussen (guitar) and Wendell Stroup (drums). Moxley has opened for Robben Ford, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers and Joe Bonamassa, and Stroup has played for Ralph Mathis and contributed to the soundtrack for "Tango & Cash." Thelonius James and Greger Welnum
This blues duo won the SCV Blues Society's "Battle of the Bands" in 2009 and competed in the 2010 IBC in Memphis. James has performed with Delaney Bramlett and Paul Butterfield, and released two original blues albums. Walnum has played with Bo Diddley, Bill Clark, and Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs. Triple Threat
Triple Threat is a kid's band based in Southern California and is comprised of Austin Scott (guitar and vocals), Nate Burhans (bass guitar) and Snot Hammond (drums). The trio perform original rock songs and a variety of classic hits. They won the Simi Cajun Festival Kid's Talent Competition in 2009 and Scott performed on live television in February of 2009.
