Mules help radiation survey
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency has a new weapon in the fight against radioactive contamination at a Los Angeles-area lab: Mules.

The EPA will use four mules to carry high-tech scanning equipment to detect radiation on steep and rocky terrain at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory.

The EPA is conducting a survey of soil and water contamination at the lab near Simi Valley, where rocket engines were tested for years and a partial meltdown of a nuclear reactor took place in 1959.

Woman sentenced for trying to poison husband
CASTLE ROCK, Colorado (AP) — A woman who pleaded guilty to putting a poisonous plant on her husband’s salad was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.

Douglas County prosecutor Bryan Garrett says Lisa Leigh Allen’s actions show she had “malice in her heart” and that her husband could’ve suffered a slow “torturous death” for eating the lethal foxglove plant on his dinner salad. Foxglove is a decorative garden plant.
