For the young members of Cub Scouts Den 4, Pack 66, a hawk named Kia is more than just a natural wonder.

She's an inspiration.

The scouts were so moved by the bird of prey after a visit to Placerita Canyon Nature Center that they took it upon themselves to raise money for her via a yard sale and donations.

The 8- and 9-year-old boys felt a "sense of ownership toward this bird," said co-den leader Brandy Sweeney.

"I think it exemplifies what Boys Scouts of America stands for in many ways," Sweeney said.

Surpassing their $250 goal means that the group has successfully adopted Kia and the money will go toward food and care.

"They were all excited," Sweeney said. "I think they felt a sense of accomplishment."

Co-den leader Joel von Mecklenburg also noticed the boys' admiration for Kia.

"They were just amazed that they could stand so close to that bird," she said. "They couldn't stop talking about it."

One scout, 8-year-old Cody Webb, showed true dedication to the task of adoption. Webb was rewarded $50 after returning a stranger's lost wallet. The reward money went immediately to Kia.

"We just needed a few (more dollars)," he said.

The third-grader noted that being kind to others and being a good citizen is part of being a good scout. Likewise, respecting nature is paramount in the scout organization.

"It's just something I wanted to do, because it's very cool to see nature," Webb said.

Or, as Sweeney put it: "Boy scouts were green before green was cool."

The exposure, to and education about, nature is a long-held tradition in the scouts, according to Mecklenburg.

"Boy Scouts tries to teach the boys about the outdoors," she said. "For some of them, they leave and they just want to go back."
