Think twice before criticizing

I believe Bill King (“Misusing handicap placards,” May 13) needs to think twice before questioning someone using a handicapped placard.

First he implies with his “middle-aged gentleman” comment that placards are only for the elderly. Placards are issued for people of all ages if a need exists.

Just because there is no “visible” evidence, it does not mean that it is not needed. I have a friend who has had a heart condition since her early 30s and needs it daily. I have arthritis in my feet and hip, and although I do not limp along, I am definitely in pain most of the time and use it when needed.

I am sure there are abusers of these cards like anything else, but for the most part they are used for a legitimate need. It is not fun being on the receiving end of disapproving looks or nasty comments.

Next time, Mr. King, I hope you give the subject a bit more thought before you criticize someone.
