Why deny me my rights?

On the front page of today's edition of The Signal ("Ferry: Stop ‘developmental terrorism,'" June 1), Santa Clarita City Councilman Frank Ferry is reported to refer to citizens who organize against certain development projects as "developmental terrorists."

Apparently, Councilwoman Marsha McLean concurs with this outrageous characterization of ordinary citizens. Ferry even went further, suggesting that developers sue for libel and slander those who oppose their developments.

Ferry should apprise himself of the Bill of Rights of the Constitution, which states, in part, in Amendment No. 1: "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech ... or right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Will Ferry try to deny me these rights?

Ferry mentioned the Smiser Ranch property's proposed development, which was - and is - opposed by the neighborhoods because of the negative impact such proposed development would have on the area.

I considered the "Avenues" proposal for the Smiser Ranch to be inappropriate for our neighborhood. Surely Ferry is not advocating that we wait until the project is a fait accompli before expressing legitimate concerns

Such intemperate remarks by Ferry must question his suitability to represent the people of our city. I think there is some hypocrisy on the part of McLean, who some years ago as a private citizen, took on the county of Los Angeles in defeating the proposed dump in Whitney Canyon, and then used her dump-opposition success to get herself elected to our City Council.
