Baseball has long been known as America’s pastime.

Learn more about the multifaceted baseball player Christy Mathewson, winner of 373 games during his career, by attending this acclaimed one-man theatrical performance 6:30 p.m. today at the Canyon Theatre Guild.

"Matty: An Evening With Christy Mathewson" has been presented at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

The show follows the tradition of such stage vehicles as Hal Holbrooks's "Mark Twain Tonight" and James Whitmore's "Give ‘em Hell, Harry!"

Performed by Eddie Frierson, of Santa Clarita, this portrait of the early 20th-century pitching legend is based largely on the subject's own words. The show concludes with "Matty" crossing over into the 21st century and engaging the audience in a question-and-answer session.

Frierson said "Matty" isn't strictly about baseball - the sport and Mathewson as its first hero are metaphors for life.

Mathewson said, "If you touch one life in a positive manner, you have succeeded in your own."

Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Patricia Hayes Community Service Scholarship Fund.

Patricia Hayes is the late mother of Santa Clarita resident Greg Hayes.

Tickets are available at the door. Prices are $12 for adults and $8 for students.

Call Greg Hayes for advance purchase of tickets or for information: (661) 254-0960.

"Matty: An Evening with Christy Mathewson" will be performed 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Canyon Theatre Guild, 24242 Main St., Newhall. Show website: The Canyon Theater Guild,
