Come Nov. 4, voters will be asked to decide on a $300 million Proposition 39 general obligation bond election to provide funds for the Hart district.

The William S. Hart Union High School District governing board voted Wednesday to hold a bond election in order to provide funds for various construction, acquisition, rehabilitation, modernization and improvement projects.

“Some of our high schools and junior highs are the oldest in the valley. The district has classroom buildings that are 40 years old and badly need repairs, safety improvements and technology upgrades,” said Rob Gapper, chief operations officer for the district. “I know many schools throughout the valley need relief from overcrowding.”

Projects that would be funded by the bond measure include modernizing classrooms, replacing temporary buildings, upgrading facilities to meet fire and safety codes and relieving overcrowding at existing schools by adding a new high school in the Castaic area.

A survey taken in the spring found that 65 percent of Santa Clarita Valley residents would vote for a bond. General obligation bonds can be approved by 55 percent of voters in an election.

“I was very excited about the response from our community,” board member Patricia Hanrion said. “That tells me that they are interested in our educational programs, and they want us to be able to deliver those programs in buildings that are modern, clean and safe.”

Board member Paul Strickland said there are basically three reasons why people move to Santa Clarita: For a safe community, housing and good schools.

“It doesn’t matter about good economic times or bad times, people want good schools,” Strickland said.
