2Day in Hostory

Today is Tuesday, June 22, the 173rd day of 2010. There are 192 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History: On June 22, 1940, during World War II, Adolf Hitler gained a stunning victory as France was forced to sign an armistice eight days after German forces overran Paris.

Five years ago: White House adviser Karl Rove set off a political firestorm with a speech to the New York state Conservative Party in which he said, “Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers” while conservatives, he said, “saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war.”

One year ago:
President Barack Obama signed the nation’s toughest anti-smoking law, aiming to keep thousands of teens from getting hooked.

AP Odd News
Siblings battle over butter

WATERVILLE, Washington (AP) — An argument over butter in a macaroni and cheese recipe churned into violence between a brother and sister near East Wenatchee.

A 21-year-old man called police June 6 to say his 17-year-old sister had tried to cut his neck with the serrated edge of a spatula.

The police report says the sister was making macaroni and cheese when her brother asked if she was using butter. That led to an argument over the difference between butter and margarine. And, then butter battle escalated.

The Wenatchee World reports the girl was charged in Douglas County Superior Court with fourth-degree assault.

Armless woman receives black belt
PEABODY, Massachusetts (AP) — A Massachusetts woman who was born without arms or kneecaps has passed her test for a black belt in taekwondo.

Sheila Radziewicz successfully completed earlier this month a black belt test at Bruce McCorry’s Martial Arts in Peabody.

The 32-year-old Salem resident, who was born with thrombocytopenia-absent radius, or TAR syndrome, called the test the “longest, most excruciating” workout of her life.

The test required her to break wood, execute combinations of kicks and punches, spar and show mastery of the long staff and nunchucks.

Museum starts summer with snow
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The patrons carrying small coolers and plastic bags into Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Science Center weren’t bringing their lunch. They were packing snowballs.

Monday marked the first day of summer and the science museum’s annual Snowball Day. Visitors are encouraged every year to save a snowball from the winter in their freezer and then take it to the science center on the first day of summer.
Those who do get to name their own price to get into the museum for the day.
