Sheriff’s officials called off a local search on Saturday morning for a missing Santa Monica man after volunteer crews and an aerial team scoured the hills near Lake Hughes Road.

“We couldn’t find him,” said Lt. Mark Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The missing man, Donald Carter, was described as a 77-year-old white male, standing 5 feet, 7 inches and weighing 140 pounds. He has gray hair, brown eyes and a slight build.

Deputies found Carter’s car parked on Friday night about 11 miles east of Interstate 5 in the Warm Springs area, near Lake Hughes Road, Hershey said.

Carter’s wife told officials that her husband is in good physical and mental shape and hikes often, but he never camps out overnight, Hershey said. Carter has not been home since June 28.

Nineteen searchers of three different Search and Rescue teams, eight dogs and an aerial squad combed the area.

Local sheriff’s officials, who headed up the search, called it off at 11:30 a.m.

“It’s thick brush,” Hershey said. “We’ve gone through the immediate area where we think he is.”
