Help us bring in the bands

Regarding “Parade was a disappointment,” (July 9): As a member of the Fourth of July parade committee, I appreciate the letter sent in about how disappointed the writer was with this year’s parade.

I would like to remind everyone that the parade, as so many things in our city, is run by volunteers. We come together in February or March and begin planning. Everyone is invited to be in the parade. Participating in the parade is also voluntary.

Some years we have more entries, and some years fewer.

The parade committee begins each year saying we would like a band or two in the parade this year. What’s a parade without a high school band? Every year, we invite every high school to participate. This year I started in September 2009 (I am also a teacher in the William S. Hart Union High School District). I contacted each high school and asked each one to please join in our celebration of Independence Day.

Unfortunately, no school wanted to participate. So we sweetened the deal. Still, no school wanted to participate. There are several reasons. First, school is out and the band members scatter, as do all students when the bell rings. Secondly, the band teachers are off for the summer. We face this dilemma every year, and every year we think up new ways to try to entice the high schools to participate. Unfortunately, they don’t.

If you have an idea as to how we could bring a band into the parade and make the parade better, join us in planning next year’s parade. As I said, the parade committee is open to everyone — we are all volunteers.

The Fourth of July itself, the parade, our country and our community make me proud. I want the Fourth of July parade to be the best it can be, and that is why I volunteer. So step up and help us make the parade better next year.
