Members of the Newhall Community Center’s karate team won several honors at an international competition in Las Vegas recently.

More than 200 competitors from as far as Canada and Mexico descended on Las Vegas to exhibit their martial arts skills in the International Martial Arts Council’s USA Martial Arts World Championships Tournament.

Participants from the Newhall Community Center team took home four first-place, three second-place, five third-place and four fourth-place trophies.

“The city is very proud of our Community Center kids who worked so hard and earned trophies,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste.

“They bring honor to themselves and to the city of Santa Clarita,” Weste said. The Newhall Community Center is city owned and operated.

Dave Moreno is the volunteer instructor for the award-winning Community Center team.

Moreno says he has been instructing the team for more than five years and works to instill respect, integrity, discipline and a can-do attitude in all his students.
