Placerita Canyon residents living near The Master’s College are encouraged to attend a public hearing Tuesday where planning commissioners will discuss the environmental effects of the college’s 10-year expansion plans.

The college’s plans include a new 120-bed dormitory, a 55,000-square-foot chapel and two classrooms.

The first phase of the expansion includes the extension of Dockweiler Drive and Deputy Jake Drive across the ridgeline at the south end of the campus. The road extension would provide a connection from Sierra Highway to the southwest end of the campus. A separate project proposed by the city could eventually connect Dockweiler Drive to Lyons Avenue in downtown Newhall.

The plans also include 54 new condominium units that would be built north of Deputy Jake Drive and would help offset the cost of expanding the campus.

The Placerita Canyon Property Owners Association is supporting the college’s expansion plans, but some residents living near the terminus of Dockweiler Drive and Deputy Jake Drive have expressed concern about potential traffic problems.

The estimated timeline for public hearings are as follows:

• July 29: Overview of and discussion on the Draft Environmental Impact Report

• Sept. 2: Response to Planning Commission and public issues/concerns, draft environmental impact report discussion

• Oct. 7: Response to Planning Commission and public issues/concerns, final project issues and recommendation to the City Council

• November 2008 through January 2009: City Council public hearings

The Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.
