Wrong, wrong, wrong

Regarding "Will gay marriage become the law of the land?" (Aug. 8): It's a funny thing about rights; they don't go in or out based on popularity in politics. Ben Boychuck is wrong again.

The question was not, and is not, about whether a majority of Californians voted to stop gay marriage. How many times do we have to go down this path? "The world, as we know it, will end because; the slaves were freed; or blacks got the right to vote; or blacks can marry whites; or women get the vote; or the military is integrated!" Every time, the doomsayers are wrong, wrong, wrong.

And yet, here we are again. The proponents of Proposition 8 failed to prove any of the horrendous things that they said would happen if gays are allowed to marry?

Not only failed to prove - they barely argued the points at all.

I have yet to see any explanation of how gay marriage compromises heterosexual marriages. There is no evidence that children raised by gay couples are any less well-adjusted than their friends who are raised in heterosexual homes. There doesn't appear to be any evidence that children of gay couples are any more likely to be gay themselves, either.

That, in and of itself, should put to rest the nonsense of gayness being either a choice or a learned behavior.

And the argument that marriage is to produce children is just as nonsensical. Should we not allow persons who are too old to have children get married?

Marriage is "sacred" - not even close. With 50 percent of all marriages ending in divorce, that one won't pass muster either.

Ever notice that the same group of people were against women's rights, black rights and now gay rights? Hasn't it also been a great way to rile up the base of a certain political party in election years? Coincidence, I don't think so.
