Hypnosis is a tool to help you access your own mind’s ability to assist you in creating the changes you want in life. Recent articles in the Wall Street Journal and Newsweek document the proven powers of hypnosis.

Hypnosis is something anyone can use to change habits, overcome fears, achieve goals, enhance performance and deal with emotions, pain, or illness.

Hypnosis or trance states are natural states which most people experience several times a day. If you have ever been so deep in thought that someone needed to call your name more than once to get your attention; been engrossed in a good book so that the rest of the world faded away; driven on “auto-pilot” missing an exit; or experienced guided visualizations in yoga or meditation classes, then you have been in a form of hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy uses this natural state to help you make the changes you want in your life. The hypnotherapist uses a number of techniques including relaxation, direct suggestions, imagery and visualization to help you.

Most areas of your life that you want to improve can be addressed with hypnosis. However, hypnosis is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment. In some cases, a medical or psychological referral may be required. For a list of things hypnosis is used for, visit and click on “About Hypnosis.”

If you have the desire to be hypnotized and you are able to listen to and follow instructions, you can be hypnotized. Certain people are naturally deep subjects; others experience hypnosis in a lighter state.  Either way hypnosis works well for many people.

Many people have a misconception that a person can be put under the “control” of the hypnotherapist.

This is not true. You can hear and respond to everything during hypnosis and even choose to “wake up” at will. You won’t lose control and you won’t say or do anything you don’t want to do. Most people feel deeply relaxed and enjoy the experience.

Choose a hypnotherapist you are comfortable with. The hypnotherapist is a guide who you must be comfortable enough to follow. She should offer free phone or office consultation to answer all of your questions and should be certified by a national organization such as the National Guild of Hypnotists, which guarantees she has completed a minimum level of education.

Karen Maleck-Whiteley is a Certified Hypnotherapist and owner of Balance Point Spa in Canyon Country. She also teaches meditation and stress management.
