Thanks for cleaning up

As a Van Nuys transplant, I want to give a shout-out to those who are removing hand-applied tagging from areas throughout this beautiful city.

My family and I lived in Van Nuys for many, many years. It was a lovely town where local businesses flourished, and we knew the owners. My parents owned a business on Van Nuys Boulevard that supported our family. There was The Broadway and Robinsons-May department store in Panorama City, plus great places to find a good meal.
Downtown Van Nuys was a place where you could shop with your children without looking over your shoulder. It was Downtown USA.

I know we can't recapture the past, but I also can't forget what the signals were that things were changing. Zoning changed, and huge apartment buildings were showing up on every corner and down most every block. People threw trash from their car windows. Tagging was all over the city on every wall or anywhere there was a clear space. You can get the picture.

Apartments were no longer a place where people lived for many years with their families. Transiency was the rule, rather than the exception. The folks with a vested interest in the community moved on, trying to find a place where the community cared and took pride in the area in which they lived.

Tagging is a signal that there are people here who do not respect nor belong in this community. These people are self-indulgent. The sooner these markings are removed, the sooner these fools' search for identity is erased and no longer available to share with their foolish so-called friends.

Again, a huge shout-out to those who keep our city clear of fools' names in public places.
