SACRAMENTO -- Assemblyman Cameron Smyth (R-Santa Clarita), Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Local Government, sent a letter to the Santa Clarita City Council and issued the following congratulatory statement today after the city of Santa Clarita was designated a 2010 Smarter City by the Natural Resources Defense Council:

"Today I'm proud to congratulate the city of Santa Clarita for being designated one of the NRDC's 2010 Smarter Cities.

"This award is a testament to the city's hard work and forward-thinking approach to energy conservation. It fills me with pride that I was Mayor Pro-Tem in 2004 when the city entered into the Community Energy Partnership, giving me the opportunity to play a role in shaping the vision for the future of Santa Clarita.

"As a part of that coalition, the city has been able to partner with other cities and utilities providers to achieve energy savings and implement clean energy policies.

"The city has not only taken an active role in educating ratepayers about energy-saving programs, but also in ensuring that city projects utilize clean energy technology. Among those projects are a LEED-certified library in Newhall, and a major upgrade of the Transit Maintenance Facility.

"Santa Clarita has been incredibly successful in achieving a balance between energy efficiency and cost effectiveness, and I commend the city for that."
