American duress over housing crisis not ‘whining’

I am writing in response to The Signal's recent editorial on Phil Gramm's comments on "whining."

Mr. Gramm, I can't believe you think killing yourself is "whining." It is devastating to people when the most important dream of owning a home is crushed. Don't you dare to blame the housing mess on "us people."
The mortgage companies and lenders painted such a beautiful picture: "Oh, you can afford this. You both work and have a good income, and if anything, you can refinance in a few years."

If Alan Greenspan wouldn't have attended so many cocktail parties and focused more on matters at hand, it would be a different story today.

We were told by the lenders that all would be fine, and then they slapped a different interest on top of the principal which in a few years was a totally different picture than what we started out with. We couldn't care less about Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac losing billions. Those corporate fat cats live like kings. They will never understand our pain.

People have to kill themselves like that poor woman from Massachusetts who was in the darkest hour of her life, and you call that "whining"? Shame on you. How can you sleep at night?
