Mira Costa Too Mighty for Cowboys

A tough draw was too much to overcome for a young Canyon girls basketball team Saturday night.

The Cowboys, two years off a first-round shocker in the playoffs, couldn't repeat history, losing 80-56 to third-seeded Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

"They are a very, very, very good team. They can play any style, any place anywhere," said Canyon head coach Stan Delus.

Delus went on to joke that Mira Costa should be playing in the Pac-10.

Canyon was led by Brooke Lemar with 19 points.

The Cowboys were within two points in the first and second quarters, but could never overcome the strength of their opponent.

Led by a pair of future NCAA Division I basketball players in Mikah Maly-Karros (Loyola Marymount) and Megan Richardson (Cal State Fullerton), the Mustangs ran away with the game in the second half.

Maly-Karros, the step-daughter of former Los Angeles Dodger Eric Karros, led all scorers with 28 points. Richardson contributed 17.

"We just couldn't sustain," Delus said. "They were big. At one point, they had a lineup of 5-(foot)10, 5-11, 6-1 and 6-3. ... The point guard was 5-7."

Canyon had won two consecutive first-round games including a victory over highly-seeded Buena on the road in 2005 - a victory that started a run to the Division I-A playoffs.

But mighty Mira Costa (22-5), the 24th ranked team in the state according to, proved to have too much for the Cowboys.

Nonetheless, the Cowboys do have a bright future.

A dominant freshman team whose average margin of victory was in the 50s and a third-place JV squad will see members moving on to an already young varsity team.

"The future's bright," Delus said. "We're going to start developing after a week or two. We're going into training mode."

The Cowboys end their season 15-13.

Layana White scored 10 points for the Cowboys and Angelica Sahagan contributed nine.
