Castaic resident Kelly Hackney's art recently celebrated a "coming out" party at Vino 100 in Saugus. Guests enjoyed wine and light hors d'oeuvres as they viewed a sampling of Hackney's fine art.

His unique photos on canvas - using the giclee fine art process - begin as digital photos that are transformed into fine art by transferring the image to canvas. Giclees have a higher resolution than offset lithographs.

"The giclee process and the inks that are used is so perfected that these prints will last 100 years without fading," Hackney said.

On display at Vino 100 in Saugus were nearly half a dozen of Hackney's series on wine featuring warm tones of yellow, red, orange and gold.

"I like wine so much I started photographing it," Hackney said, smiling.

In reality, Hackney's wine series started as a challenge from a friend.

"He wanted some wine art and couldn't find what we wanted - something more modern than what was out there," Hackney said.

In response to his friend's request, Hackney began experimenting and soon produced his first series of fine art photo giclees. He is selling his art in limited editions of 15.

Hackney, a writer/producer/editor for the CW Plus, has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley nearly 10 years with wife Valerie and son Max.

Lil Lepore, co-owner of Vino 100, said she decided to host the art exhibit to give Hackney's art a wider audience.

"I've wanted to have art exhibits in the store," Lepore said. "When Kelly gave us (Lepore and co-owner Shari Fraiser) this beautiful piece of art he created we decided he would be the perfect artist to feature.

He's very talented so we're thrilled we can exhibit his art, the colors are beautiful."

In addition to his work for the CW Plus, Hackney has started his own company, "captured digital," which specializes in multi-media solutions for business (

Upcoming events: Plan-ned this month at Vino 100 are Women on Wine night on Wednesday and a New Zealand wine tasting on Aug. 20. Reservations required for both events.
