UPDATED: Deadline for ‘SCV Rock Star’ entries midnight tonight

Local talent vying for major prizes

Santa Clarita Valley-based musical artists and bands have until midnight tonight to enter the "SCV Rock Star" contest, presented exclusively online by in association with top SCV rock promoter Higher Level Productions.

Local artists may enter by uploading a one-song video and brief description of their band and its music.

Fans may also enter videos on behalf of their favorite bands. Home-made videos are welcome.

"If you can shoot a video for YouTube, you can shoot one for this contest," said Stephen K. Peeples, online editor of and creator and coproducer of the contest.

"So far, we have some excellent entries from fast-rising local bands as well as previously unknown talent," he said. "If you haven't entered yet, you still have time today and tonight. The killer prize packages make it well worth the effort."

"We urge all Higher Level bands to sign up and enter this contest now!" said Bret Lieberman, Higher Level co-owner and contest co-producer.

After the SCV Rock Star submission period ends, online voting opens to all visitors Saturday morning at 12:01, and fans may vote up to five times daily per unique, registered and legitimate e-mail address through Sunday, Sept. 7.

The top three finalists in each of the Pro and Am categories as determined by the online votes will perform live at the contest's big finale, the "SCV Rock Star Night" concert at the Sports Complex Friday night, Sept, 19.

At the concert, a panel of expert judges will add their scores to the finally tally and determine the first-, second- and third-place winners in each category. A Best Video winner will also be named from among the entries.

The judges panel will be announced next week.

Top SCV Rock Star contest prizes include time at Command Recording Studios, time at Hubbadaddy's rehearsal studios, a new performance-based music video produced by Artistry Cinematics, a professional photo session from Paige Photography, a separate headlining concert produced by Higher Level, and coverage in The Signal newspaper and on

Finalists may also be included in "Rockstar Reality," a new documentary about the SCV music scene now being produced by Lisa Lane and Lisa Lujano of La Lu Productions, who will shoot the SCV Rock Star Night event for their video.

SCV Rock Star contest sponsors include Mission View Public School, the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons, Robek's Juice of North Park Village and Lowe's Music of Newhall.
