The following photographs were taken at the Way Station Coffee Shop on an early Tuesday morning in Newhall.

The diner opened in 1971, and starts serving the Santa Clarita Valley its coffee and breakfast at 5 a.m.

Acton resident and regular customer Mike Elton, pictured below, described the restaurant as a sort of meeting place for morning commuters. “I’ve met a lot of friends here,” he said of the diner.

Everybody has their own reason reasons for why they enjoy an a.m. pit stop at the Way Station.

Newhall resident Clarence Weiss said he comes for the cuisine. “The food’s hot, and it’s great,” he says. “I’ve been coming here for breakfast for a little over a year, and I love it.

Victor Gonzalez, pictured left, has served the coffee shop’s morning crowd since 1980. As he fries a seemingly endless pile of hash browns — a Way Station specialty — for customers looking to enjoy a hearty sit-down meal, it’s clear another day is under way in the Santa Clarita Valley.
