Standing up for a friend

I just returned from three days with my daughters at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I was so energized and excited because of the thousands of women there who raised more than $6 million to fight this horrible disease. Then I crashed to earth when I read the Country Journal letters to the editor regarding the "raid" by Los Angeles County on a local "animal hoarder."

I know this woman well; I am proud to call her a friend, and I admire her more than I can say. She is no hoarder, nor has she ever mistreated or neglected an animal.

This woman has sacrificed her home, her money and her life to protecting and nurturing wounded, abandoned and ill animals.

She has used every cent she has to do this. She does this with a background rich in training - animal science/biology/chemistry/animal husbandry.

Her compassion is not reserved for animals alone. She is the quintessential "friend in need." When I was sick in the hospital with pneumonia, she was there. When my neighbor needed someone to care for her animals for long periods of time, she was there. When I needed advice on how to treat my critically ill pets (after the vets had given up), she was there.

I pray this community takes a moment to think about what has happened and bands together to support an individual who lives every day of her life helping others. Maybe it is time for Agua Dulce to develop an official animal shelter run by someone who has the education and heart to make a difference.

To those who may rejoice at this woman's misfortune, I would remind them without her most of the animals taken will die in county facilities.

We send our deepest regards to this warm-hearted and generous woman. We are here for her with whatever support we can give. God bless you, my friend. Don't give up hope.
