PR decision left to panel

The decision as to whether a public relations firm will be hired to pump up the Hart district's reputation in advance of the bond election will be left to the new bond steering committee.

The item was up for discussion and a vote on the Hart district board's agenda for the Aug. 6 meeting, but was removed after the board decided to let the committee decide.

"Initially when we were looking at the bond situation, we thought it would be a good idea to tie a PR firm in with the bond," said Jaime Castellanos, superintendent of the William S. Hart Union High School District.

"But we decided it would be a better idea for the bond steering committee to make that decision themselves, and to fund it through the donations and not have the district involved in that."

A $300 million Proposition 39 general obligation bond election to provide funds for the Hart district will be on the ballot Nov. 4. A survey taken in the spring found that 65 percent of Santa Clarita Valley residents would vote "yes" on a bond measure.

"At this time, we're going to leave the decision up to the committee, but we'll be discussing it with our bond consultant," Castellanos said.

The bond steering committee is made up of about 25 to 30 members from various parts of the Santa Clarita Valley. They have met twice so far and have another meeting coming up, Castellanos said.

"The board looked into hiring a PR firm about a year and a half ago, but we decided to drop it at that time," he said. "But we have known for a long time that a PR firm is needed - there's just so much that goes on in the district."
