Support expansion of a great hospital

My husband and I have called Valencia our home for the past 10 years and have seen a lot of growth from the construction of new homes, new retail stores and a variety of restaurants.

This development continues to enhance our city, offering homeowners food and merchandise choices, keeping the revenue in our city and reducing driving time and gas for the residents. With this vast growth comes the ever-growing need for a state-of-the-art hospital. The Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital master plan enhances a great hospital into that state-of-the-art hospital that our Santa Clarita Valley is desperate for.

Since 2002 Henry Mayo has been a big part of my family’s life. In 2002 my brother-in-law was hospitalized at Henry Mayo, and it was touch and go if he would survive. But the excellent staff of doctors and nurses saved his life by stepping out of the “box” and using an experimental treatment.

A few years later in 2005, my mother broke her left hip and was hospitalized at Henry Mayo. The ambulance brought her from Sunrise at Sterling Canyon to the ER room.

When I got to the ER, I was allowed to go in the back right away since she had Alzheimer’s. She was seen by a doctor, had X-rays, and then the doctor returned with the results all within maybe two hours.

She needed surgery to fix the hip bone, but it took from 2:30 p.m. until 11:45 p.m. to get her moved from the hallway of the ER into a room in the hospital. That was an eternity for an 82-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s who was in pain.

The nurses were very attentive, but they had done all they could do for her in the ER, and they did not have control of the hospital room vacancy.

Once again in 2006, about eight months later, my mother broke her other hip, and again an ambulance took her from Sunrise to the Henry Mayo ER. This time we only had a six-hour wait until she was moved into a hospital room.

Henry Mayo’s master plan will ensure that there is more health care closer to our homes to keep up with the ever-expanding community. It will also add more hospital beds, which in turn will cut the time waiting for a room, add operating rooms, and return a heliport, which is paramount for a hospital’s trauma center.

I hope that all of you support Henry Mayo’s master plan as enthusiastically as I support the growth of the Santa Clarita Valley.
