With the help of other patrons, a man fended off three would-be robbers at a gas station convenience store in Saugus Thursday afternoon, according to a news release from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

The victim, a 64-year-old resident of Saugus, managed to inflict stab wounds on one of the alleged attackers, who fled.

A few hours later a man sought medical treatment for stab wounds at a San Fernando Valley hospital, and was arrested by L.A. County Sheriff's deputies.

At about 1:55 p.m.. deputies had responded to a robbery call at the Mobil gas station in the 26900 block of Seco Canyon Road in Saugus, where a patron of the store was allegedly being robbed.

The victim had pumped gas into his car and then walked into the gas station market to purchase a couple of extra items and complete his gas transaction.

Inside the store, three men started to talk to him and to touch the items he carried on his belt. He was suspicious and put some distance between the men and himself.

Suddenly they began yelling at him and demanded that he hand over the items on his belt. They punched and choked him while witnesses in the store tried to intervene and call 9-1-1 for help.

The victim, who was being choked, took his pocket knife out and stabbed one of the suspects, striking him several times in the leg. The witnesses intervened and all three suspects ran from the gas station.

Deputies contained the surrounding area and conducted a search for the suspects, but witnesses reported seeing the described suspects get into a white car and drive away.

The victim was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire paramedics.

At 3:30 p.m., deputies were advised that a man was being treated for stab wounds to the legs at a San Fernando Valley Hospital.

Deputies responded to the hospital emergency room and arrested Gerardo Guzman, 38, of Saugus, for attempted robbery and felony assault. He was also charged with several warrants and is being held in the Los Angeles Country Jail in lieu of $215,000 bail.

Two other suspects are still outstanding, both male Hispanics. One suspect appeared to be between the ages of 18 and 22 and the other between 20 and 25.
