Suspected watch bandit busted in sting

A man suspected of stealing a $6,000 watch from a Valencia jewelry store was arrested on Wednesday after he attempted to sell the watch to an undercover sheriff’s deputy at Valencia Town Center Mall, authorities said.

Brandon Carrera, 22, allegedly stole the watch from the Ro, Ma Jewelers retail store at the mall Oct. 27,  according to a statement from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

With the help of the jewelry-store employees, detectives were able to locate an identical watch for sale on the Internet.

After talking with Carrera, an undercover sting was set up. Authorities used security video at the shop of the theft to identify Carrerra, according to the statement.

When Carrera showed met with undercover detectives, authorities verified the watch’s serial number. When authorities tried to arrest him, Carrera resisted and struggled.

During the tussle, Carrera and deputies fell into a glass fragrance display case inside the Macy’s store in the mall, shattering it.

Carrera and two deputies were had minor injuries and were were treated at a local hospital and released.

Carrera was booked at the SCV Sheriff’s Station on suspicion of grand theft, burglary and forcibly resisting a police officer. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
