The Valencia High School cheerleading squad left cheer camp at the University of California Santa Barbara with the Top Banana award earlier this month, and the school honored them for their achievement Thursday with a banana split party.

The Top Banana award is presented to the top squad at the camp, and Valencia's varsity, junior varsity and freshman cheerleaders all helped the school secure the top award. Around 40 squads from 14 schools took part in the rigorous four-day camp, which kept the cheerleaders busy performing routines from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

In addition to the Top Banana award, the varsity squad took first place in the Extreme Routine category and won the Superior Camp Champ award. In the JV and Below division, the junior varsity squad took first place in the Cheer Routine and Extreme Routine categories, and also won the Superior Camp Champ award. The freshman squad placed third in the JV and Below division and was chosen the most improved squad at camp.

There are 77 Valencia cheerleaders, with 25 varsity, 28 junior varsity and 24 freshmen. All three squads will hold a Cheer Clinic fundraiser on Oct. 18 for young, aspiring cheerleaders.

For information about the clinic, call Cheer Advisor Don Madrid at (661) 294-1188, Ext. 546.
