Early morning commuters may want to sleep in a bit this week as workers demolishing the Hasley Canyon Bridge prompt the shut down of lanes in both directions.

In a press release issued Friday by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, the week-long demolition has demanded they alert the public about closures on Interstate-5 at Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic.

Southbound I-5 freeway closures from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m. will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between today and Friday.

The detour for the southbound I-5 traffic will exit at Lake Hughes Road off-ramp, south on The Old Road to the southbound Route 5 on-ramp, north of Rye Canyon.

Northbound I-5 freeway closures from 11:59 pm to 5:00 am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between August 26 through 28.

The department, in its press release, describe the closures slated for both lanes as: "There will be full freeway closures in one direction of the freeway, and 2 lanes in the opposite direction simultaneously."

The detour for the northbound traffic will exit at 126 west; south on Commerce Center Drive; east on Henry Mayo Drive; north on The Old Road to the northbound Route 5 on-ramp, at Lake Hughes Road.

The purpose of the freeway closures is to allow for the demolition of the existing Hasley Canyon Bridge.

"Changeable" message signs will be posted to guide motorists throughout the detour, according to the department.

Also, California Highway Patrol officers are expected to be present at the site to assist motorists.

The department, in cooperation with the State of California Department of Transportation, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Newhall Land and Farming Company, has contracted with Security Paving Company, Inc. to construct the needed improvements consisting of:

- constructing a new bridge at Hasley Canyon Road over the Interstate-5.
- modifying the existing interchange by building modern roundabouts on the east and west sides of the I-5 Freeway
- realigning the existing northbound on and off ramps and southbound on ramp and providing new southbound on and off ramps connecting to The Old Road
- installing new traffic signals at the intersection of Sedona Way and I-5 southbound on and off ramps
- widening and seismically retrofitting the I-5 bridge over Castaic Creek
- installing rock slope protection along the channel banks of Castaic Creek at the upstream end of the I-5 bridge
