Hospital expansion: a contrast of two opinions

I was struck by the contrast of the two facing columns appearing on the front of the Opinion section in the Aug. 17 Signal.

On the left side of the page was a piece by local resident David Gauny titled "The vote that G&L Realty bought." He cited his objections to the campus office building expansion proposed on the Henry Mayo Hospital property, and the controversy surrounding contributions to a City council member's election campaign.

Gauny explained very clearly the history and the facts surrounding the campus expansion plan, and why he challenges the proposal, and why a substantial contribution by an associate of G&L Realty to a City council member's campaign is utterly unethical and inappropriate. Moreover, Gauny suggested four remedies which could be instituted by the principals in the campus expansion plan to make the project acceptable.

On the opposite side of that page was a column by Tim Myers, titled "Assuming facts not in evidence."

Myers' column was not about the hospital controversy nor about the City Council. It was aimed only at Gauny, and seemed to be nothing more than a personal attack on him. Myers' column lacked even a single credible fact to counter anything that Mr. Gauny had cited. It was filled with nothing but legal gobbledygook and innuendo. Anyone reading Myers' column would assume that Gauny was solely responsible for the mortgage meltdown in the Santa Clarita Valley. Gimme a break!

David Gauny is an upstanding citizen and is devoting his time and efforts for the betterment of this community.

Myers' column is nothing more that an effort to personally discredit David Gauny. I think his statements are ludicrous, disparaging and defamatory. I am astounded that The Signal would print such a piece in the paper.
